WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army women’s tennis cruised to its fifth straight victory on Saturday morning with a 7-0 defeat of the visiting Connecticut Huskies. The Black Knights improved to 5-1 on the season, including a flawless 5-0 mark at the friendly confines of Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Huskies fell to 0-1 on the season.
Army jumped to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles point for the fifth straight match. Sisterly duo Della Taylor and Elle Taylor won their fifth match in the last six tries with an 8-4 victory over Jennifer Learnmonth and Maxene Weinberg at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Jamila Paul and junior co-captain Erin Colton earned their fourth win in a row with an 8-4 defeat of Alexa Gregory and Lucy Nutting at the No. 2 position.
Colton and Paul added straight-set singles victories to their list of accomplishments for the day as well. Colton knocked off Gregory 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot to halt her four-match losing skid spanning this dual season. Paul’s 6-3, 6-4 victory over Weinberg at No. 2 was her third in the last four matches.
Sophomore Carly Riney notched her first dual match win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marie Gargiulo at No. 6 singles.
The win moved Army’s all-time mark against Connecticut to 15-0, dating back to the 1994 season.
Army will look to put the cap on its second straight weekend sweep when the Black Knights host Fordham at 1 p.m.
