Women's Tennis Splits Saturday Home Doubleheader

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army women’s tennis wrapped up its home weekend tripleheader by splitting its Saturday contests. The Black Knights fell to Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3, to open the day before topping Bryant, 6-1, to finish the day. Army moves to 9-4 on the season while the Knights jumped to 5-4 and the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1.
Army suffered its first home loss of the season as FDU earned just its third win against the Black Knights in 11 tries.
Army fell behind 1-0 after losing 2-of-3 doubles matches. Sophomore Jamila Paul and junior Erin Colton collected the Black Knights’ sole doubles victory, topping Julia Prantl and Egzona Morina, 8-5, at No. 2. The win marked the pair’s seventh in their last eight tries.
Paul evened things at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles against Elmine Botes. She improved to 11-7 on the year, the second-best win total among the Black Knights. FDU won three straight contests at Nos. 5, 1 and 4 to snatch the 4-3 victory.
In the second match of the day, Army swept the doubles point, including wins by Paul and Colton, the Taylor sisters, and sophomores Margaret Iliev and Carly Riney. Della and Elle Taylor jumped to a team-best 15-7 on the season with their two wins over the weekend.
Army won 5-of-6 singles matches against the Bulldogs, all in straight sets. Both Taylor sisters captured victories, as did Iliev, Riney and freshman Maya Parker. Parker’s 6-1, 6-3 edging of Stephanie Smyers at No. 5 marked her third straight win.
Army improved to 3-0 all-time against Bryant, which collected its first point in the series in Saturday’s 6-1 loss.
Up next for the Black Knights, Army will travel to regional powerhouse Cornell on Feb. 29. The first serve is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., at Reis Tennis Center.
