Women's Tennis Defeats Manhattan 6-1

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Playing in its first match in over two weeks, Army women’s tennis defeated Manhattan, 6-1, on its home courts of Lichtenberg Tennis Center. With the win, the Black Knights improve to 12-5 on the year, including 12-1 at home, while the Jaspers fall to 3-8.
Army opened the match by sweeping the doubles point, beginning with sophomore Della Taylor and freshman sister Elle Taylor sealing a quick 8-1 victory over Lili Johnson and Brianna Turano at No. 1. The win was the 18th of the season for the sisterly duo and 10th of the dual slate.
Junior co-captain Erin Colton and sophomore Jamila Paul also secured their 10th win of the dual season, topping Hilary Valenzuela and Caitlin Bricketto, 8-2, at No. 2. The pair jumped to 10-3 this spring with the win.
Teaming together for the first time this season, junior co-captain Larraine Saavedra and sophomore Margaret Iliev rounded out Army’s doubles winners. The Black Knight duo defeated Catherine Clark and Stephanie Tsao, 8-2, at No. 3.
In singles play, Army swept five of the six matches in straight sets, inlcuding clean 6-0, 6-0 sweeps by Paul and freshman Natalie Allen. Allen’s win was her team-best 19th of the season, while Paul improved to 14-7 to tie for second on the squad after her sixth consecutive ‘W’.
Della Taylor notched her 14th win of the year as well, defeating Tsao, 6-2, 6-2, for her fifth victory in a row.
Army improved to 6-0 all-time against its regional foe.
Up next for the Black Knights, Army will host NJIT on March 30 at 4 p.m., in its final nonconference tune-up before Colgate comes to West Point on March 31 for a 9 a.m. showdown. The Black Knights will look to keep their 49-match Patriot League regular-season winning streak alive against the Raiders.
