WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army men’s tennis split a pair of matches on Saturday, falling to Binghamton 4-3 in its weekend opener before clinching a 4-2 win against St. Bonaventure. The Black Knights and Bonnies only played singles, with the doubles point to be decided tomorrow morning at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
The Bearcats (6-9) snapped a four-match losing streak with their win over the Black Knights (10-8). The teams faced off on Army’s outdoor courts at Malek Tennis Center, marking the first outdoor home match of the season.
Playing singles contests first, sophomore Asika Isoh and junior Alex Holland tacked on the Black Knights’ first two points of the match. With losses by Rommel Verano, Henry Jang-Milsten and Alex Van Velzer, Army fell behind 3-2 with the match decided at the No. 6 spot. Freshman Peter Sienko’s attempt to make the doubles point the decider fell short as Binghamton’s Ruben Haggai prevailed, 6-3, 7-6, to seal the match in favor of the Bearcats.
Army won the subsequent doubles point to narrow the final margin to 4-3. Isoh and Jang-Milsten won their team-best 14th doubles contest of the season while Sienko and junior Rashad Shelton clinched their third of the year.
In singles play against the Bonnies (1-9), Army won three of its four matches in straight-set fashion, including Isoh who captured his team-best 16th victory of the season. At No. 1, the Cambria Heights, N.Y., native topped Oscar Yanez, 6-0, 6-2, for his sixth win in the last seven tries.
Sienko rebounded from his morning loss by knocking off Javier Ortiz, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5, while Shelton defeated Trevor Haskell at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3.
Army improved to 4-0 all-time against St. Bonaventure, while falling to 6-3 against Binghamton.
The Black Knights and Bonnies will play their doubles matches at 9 a.m., tomorrow morning at Lichtenberg Tennis Center, followed by Army’s dual match against Yale.
