WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army men’s tennis defeated Boston University 5-2 in a nonconference match at West Point’s Malek Courts on Saturday afternoon. The Black Knights battled back after dropping a highly contested doubles point to win five of six singles contests to seal the win.
Army (14-11, 4-2 Patriot League) and BU (5-13, 1-0 America East) kept things tight through all three singles contests. Prior to the match, the Black Knights’ three graduating seniors – Andrew Clark, Peter Williams and Donald Van Velzer – were recognized. Van Velzer and Clark were inserted in the doubles lineup, with Van Velzer paired with freshman brother Alex Van Velzer and Clark alongside junior Alex Holland.
The Van Velzers lost to Emilio Teran and Jesse Frieder, 8-5, at No. 2 before the Terriers clinched the doubles point as Josh Friedman and Michael Kopelman knocked off Army sophomores Asika Isoh and Henry Jang-Milsten, 8-6, at No. 1. The Black Knights’ lone doubles win came by Clark and Holland at No. 3, with an 8-6 victory over Alex Hallenbeck and Marcus VanBerkel.
The singles contests proved to be just as tight, as Jang-Milsten and Kopelman battled for three sets at No. 3, while junior Rashad Shelton and BU’s Regis Chang also needed extra sets for a decision. Jang-Milsten snagged a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 victory, while Shelton topped Chang, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Army’s lone straight-set victory was by Holland, who topped Frieder, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2.
Army improves to 4-2 all-time against BU, rebounding from last season’s 5-2 setback to the Terriers. BU is Army’s oldest foe of the 2012 season, as the rivalry dates back to 1922.
The Black Knights will conclude their regular season on Monday when they travel to regional foe Marist for a 3 p.m. match. Army is 14-3 all-time against the Red Foxes, with Marist winning the 2011 season finale, 6-1, at West Point.
