Army Closes Out First Day Of West Point Invite

O'Conner and Parker, seeded fourth, teamed for a pair of victories in Flight B doubles where they topped the St. Bonaventure duo of Fatya Amin and Lauren Doversola, 8-5, and were hardly taxed in their next round rolling to an 8-3 victory over No. 1 seed Breanna Bachini and Olivia Messineo of Syracuse.
Also collecting a pair of victories in Flight B doubles were Porter and Taylor, who romped to an 8-1 win over Ali Kaminetsky and Nina Larazza of Lehigh followed by an 8-4 decision over the tandem of Cassandra Dox from Stony Brook and Jenise Vargas of UConn, 8-4. Both doubles teams will compete in Saturday's semifinal round.
In the first singles bracket, junior Carolyn Pitman, seeded fourth, posted a straight-set (6-3, 7-5) victory over NJIT's Zanotta Carolina to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round.
Two Black Knights advanced to the quarterfinal round in No. 2 singles. Junior Gabriella Spindler, seeded sixth, romped to a 6-1, 6-2 opening-round win over fifth-seeded Luccia Radovic of St. Peter's. O'Connor pulled out a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win over Manhattan's Caitlin Bricketto.
Four Army players came away with wins in No. 3 singles with Taylor, Porter and Parker picking up their second wins of the tournament. Parker yielded just one point in eliminating St. Peter's Elena Puigventos, 6-1, 6-0, in her opening round victory. Porter was touched for just two points in taking the measure of Quinnipiac's Ariana Launie, 6-2, 6-0, and Taylor rallied from a 6-4 defeat in the opening round with 6-3, 10-5 scores to down Bryant's Ashandti Campfield.
Sophomore Allyson Hayley, seeded fourth, dispatched third-seeded Nikki Rohan of Marist, 6-1, 6-2, in rounding out Army first day winners in No. 3 singles.
Freshman Julian Mok, seeded fifth, was Army's lone player alive in the No. 4 singles main drawn after recording a 6-1, 6-3 win over Fordham's Carolina Sa.
Competition resumes on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and concludes with finals on Sunday.
