Black Knights Fall to Quinnipiac in Season Opener

Hamden, Conn. – The sixth-ranked Black Knights women’s rugby team opened up the season Saturday afternoon, falling to 11th-ranked Quinnipiac 50-17.
The game was scoreless through the 17th minute of play, until Quinnipiac’s Elisa Cuellar opened up the scoring, giving the team the early advantage. They added another score to take a 12-0 lead moments later. The Bobcats would jump out to a 24-0 advantage, capitalizing on an Army turnover and an ignited offense.
Army got on the board late in the first half, when Allison Wilson scored her first try of the season, and the conversion from Ari Efaw was successful. The Black Knights, however, headed into the break trailing 24-7.
Quinnipiac continued its offensive display, earning a 43-7 advantage. Carissa Penky added the team’s second score of the afternoon, the Black Knights, however, were unsuccessful on the conversion.
Pekny added the final score for the Black Knights, and the team was again unsuccessful on the conversion.
The Bobcats added the final punch when freshman Megan Johnson recorded her first career try in the fifth minute, solidifying her team’s 50-17 victory.
Army will look to rebound on Saturday, Sept. 13 when they host conference rival Norwich in their first home action of the season.
