No. 7 Men’s Rugby Edged by No. 6 Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The seventh-ranked Army West Point men's rugby team traveled to sixth-ranked Kutztown on Saturday, falling in a back-and-forth contest to the Rugby East rival Golden Bears by a score of 39-26.
Army got on the board first in the fourth minute, as Mitchell Sanderson scored a slow ball try, with Thomas Del Pino converting the score to put the Black Knights up 7-0.
Kutztown responded with a score in the eighth minute to cut the Black Knights' lead to 7-5.
The game slowed down over the next 13 minutes until Kutztown found the try zone again to take the 10-7 advantage.
Firstie Andrew Irwin dotted down in the 26th minute and Del Pino booted the kick again to give Army the 14-10 lead.
The Golden Bears closed the game out with a swing of momentum, scoring in the 34th and 39th minutes to head into the break with a 22-14 lead.
Army set the pace in the second half, with Irwin scoring his second of the contest and Del Pino converting the try to cut Kutztown's lead to 22-21.
Three unanswered tries and one successful kick for the Golden Bears would extend their lead to 39-21 through 76 minutes of play.
Harrison Farrell scored in the waning minutes of play to cut the lead to 39-26, but time was not on Army's side as the Golden Bears earned the victory.
With the loss, Army falls to 5-2-0 on the season and surrenders the Rugby East title to Kutztown. Army will conclude its season on Nov. 6 when it travels to service academy rival Air Force for a Friday evening contest with the Falcons. The team will pick back up in the spring, in pursuit of a Varsity Cup National Championship.
