Men's Tennis Sweeps Past Sacred Heart and Rider

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army men’s tennis team ran its winning streak to six matches after picking up 7-0 victories over Sacred Heart and Rider on Sunday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Army improves to 6-3 this year, while Sacred Heart slips to 0-6 and Rider falls to 1-8.
Senior Alex Van Velzer and sophomore Sam Lampman earned an 8-5 victory at the top doubles position against Sacred Heart, while junior Harrison McCormick and sophomore Grant Riechmann picked up an 8-1 win at No. 2 and junior Austin McCasin and sophomore Kyle Barnes collected an 8-4 decision at No. 3.
Lampman, Van Velzer and Riechman posted two-set wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles slots, respectively, and freshman Michael Nguyen, Barnes and senior Peter Sienko followed suit with two-set victories of their own from the fourth, fifth and sixth singles positions, respectively, to help the Black Knights sweep past the Pioneers.
In Sunday’s second match, the Black Knights again earned the doubles point, thanks to an 8-4 win from McCasin and Barnes at the No. 1 position. Army used two different pairings than it did in the first match of the day, with juniors Sam Jang-Milsten and David Proctor recording an 8-2 decision at No. 2 and junior Joey Hatala and sophomore Cameron Voigt registering an 8-1 victory at No. 3.
The Black Knights also used six different singles players against Rider, including junior Ben Davies and freshmen Michael Sienko and Gregory Shannon, who picked up wins at the first, second and third slots, respectively. Hatala played to a 6-2, 6-3 win over his counterpart at No. 4, Jang-Milsten topped Rider’s Matt Begley, 6-1, 6-0, in the fifth position and junior Ron Verano grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 6.
Army returns to the court on Friday, Feb. 20, when it hosts Marist at 6 p.m.
