Azusa Pacific Defeats Men's Tennis, 4-3

AZUSA, Calif. - The Army men's tennis team wrapped up its season-long five-match road trip with a 4-3 setback at Azusa Pacific on Wednesday afternoon at Burrelson Tennis Center. The Black Knights fall to 9-8 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 10-3.
Army was awarded the doubles point after winning two of the three matches in doubles competition. Azusa Pacific won the No. 2 doubles match, but the Black Knights responded with wins from senior Alex Van Velzer and sophomore Sam Lampman (No. 1) and junior Austin McCasin and sophomore Kyle Barnes (No. 3) to stake a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Barnes and McCasin battled to a 7-5 victory over Azusa Pacific's Alan Leahy and Shepherd Newcomb to clinch the doubles point for the visitors.
Azusa Pacific took two of the first three singles matches, winning the No. 1 and No. 3 contests, while Van Velzer defeated Ben Eger, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2
Junior Harrison McCormick won, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 singles position to put the Black Knights on top, 3-2, before the Cougars claimed decisions in the No. 4 and No. 5 matches to seal the come-from-behind win.
Army returns home with three matches this weekend to start its Patriot League slate, beginning with a contest against Holy Cross on Saturday, March 21 at 9 a.m.
