Women’s Tennis Competes at Stony Brook, Cornell

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Competing in its first action of the fall portion of the 2015-16 season, the Army West Point women's tennis team took to the Cornell and Stony Brook Invitationals over the weekend.
At Stony Brook, the duo of Allyson Hayley and Melanie Allen combined to take the doubles title in Draw B. They opened up with a 6-1 win over a duo from Hofstra, moved on to defeat a pair from Bryant 6-4 and earned a 6-3 victory in the semifinal round over a pair from St. John's. In the title match, Army earned a 6-4 victory over a duo from Bryant.
In the same draw, Caroline Lorenzini and Leslie Frankland fell to Stony Brook 6-2, while in draw A, Eva Sung and Sera Martorelli fell to Bowdoin 7-6 and Genevieve McCormick and Julian Mok dropped a 6-3 decision against Navy.
In singles action, Lorenzini defeated Gariella Campos of Fairfield 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round, moving on to defeat Isabel Balsavage of Navy 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 before dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to a Stony Brook opponent in Draw D. Martorelli claimed a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Karen McKough of Fairfield in Draw C, but fell to Josie Rodgers of Navy 6-0, 6-2 in the following match.
Also in Draw D, Frankland earned a 2-6, 6-2, 10-2 win over Alex Bryant of Fairleigh Dickinson but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Delia Arranz of St. John's.
In Draw B, McCormick fell to Nadia Smergut of Stony Brook 6-2, 7-5 (10-7) and Hayley dropped a 6-1, 6-3 contest against Zofia Stanisz of St. John's
Julian Mok fell to Tess Trinka of Bowdoin 6-1, 6-3 in Draw C.
At Cornell, Carolyn Pitman paced the group, defeating Annie DiMuno of Binghamton 5-7, 6-4, 10-2. She then moved on to claim a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alexandra D'Ascenzo of Cornell and a 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 win over Tania Stojanovska of Buffalo to advance to the title match. Squaring off against the top-seeded Gabriela Knutson of Syracuse, Pitman fell 6-3, 6-3.
Also competing in Draw A, Gabriella Spindler fell to Chantal Martinez-Blanco of Buffalo 6-2, 6-3.
In Draw B, Nan Porter fell to Dayana Agasieva of Buffalo 6-3, 6-3 while Rugile Valiunaite dropped a match to Sophie Lesage of Towson by a score of 6-1, 6-4/
Arianna Spiritos fell to Paulina Torres of Albany 6-3, 6-1 in Draw C action, while Bridget Guenard fell to Chassidy King of Albany 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Kirby Einck defeated Yevgeniya Shusterman of Towson 6-0, 6-2 and Allegra Hanlon of Cornell 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 in Draw D to advance to the title match. In the championship match, she dropped a 7-6 (5), 6-2 decision to Laura Holterbosch of Buffalo.
On the doubles side, Pitman and Spiritos claimed an 8-4 win over Buffalo in the opening round and earned an 8-3 win over a duo from Cornell, competing in Draw A. They fell to the top-seeded pair from Syracuse by a score of 8-4 in the semifinal round.
In Draw B, Einck and Porter earned an 8-4 win over a duo from Buffo and an 8-4 victory over a pair from Syracuse. Competing in the same draw, Guenard and Spindler earned an 8-3 win over a duo from Albany but fell by a score of 8-5 to Towson.
