Nunnery Named Rookie of Meet at Patriot Leagues
October 29, 2016 | Women's Cross Country
EASTON, Pa. – The Army West Point women's cross country team finished fifth at the 2016 Patriot League Championships on Saturday.
Bethany Nunnery was the top freshman of the field earning 11th with a time of 22 minutes 06.3 seconds. This time earns Nunnery Rookie Runner of the Meet honors, the first time this has happened in the 12 years the league has been giving out the award.
ARMY'S TOP FINISHES
Bethany Nunnery – 11th (22:06.3)
Abby Halbrook – 14th (22:07.8)
Sam Coletti – 18th (22:20.9)
COACH'S COMMENT:
"Our women finished where I thought we could today. It is not where we want to be but we are a work in progress and we are young. We lined up seven freshman and a sophomore today and you never know what you are going to get when you put so many young kids into that kind of an environment. I think we got the most out of them today and I am proud of the way we executed and stayed patient. We had the two highest finishing freshmen in the meet.
"Bethany was rookie of the meet and Samantha was the next freshman finisher in 18th. We put three women in front of Navy's first which in dual scoring is an automatic win. We made up a lot of ground after the halfway point with Abby and Sam catching groups of runner. They just ran a smart controlled race. Our other women will get there. They have only been here for a short time and we just have to be patient with their development. We have a lot of work to do for sure but they are young and eager and we are on the right path."
CADETS COMMENT:
"Running here was a great experience," commented Nunnery. "We ran against a bunch of really fast girls who just got out there and got a really fast lead. We knew that if we kept our pace and didn't use all of our energy right away that we could catch them at the end of the race. We made sure that we knew what our goals were going into the race and we made sure to stick to those goals."
