BOCA RATON, Fla. – Led by Nick Turner's program-record performance, the Army West Point golf team defeated Florida Atlantic by a total of 24 strokes on Monday at Osprey Point Golf Club.
"The team has been working extremely hard and to see it pay off in the first tournament of the spring really shows the potential of what these young men are capable of doing," said head coach Brian Watts. "To break the single round scoring record by six shots at -17 is absolutely amazing considering we didn't have a chance to play the golf course prior to the tournament today."
The Black Knights set a new academy record with a 17-under performance with a 261 total score, while the Owls finished with a 285.
Turner fired a program-record 8-under par score of 64 with a 30 on the back nine to secure the top spot on the leaderboard. Peter Kim and Dean Sakata each carded a 4-under par 68 with pair of 34s on the front and back nine.
"Nick's school record 64 was a great round," Watts said. "He has been feeling comfortable and confident with all aspects of his game and it showed today. Both Peter and Dean fired four under 68's along with Justin's 71 to win the first event of the spring season."
Justin Paguila shot a 1-under 71 to round out the lineup that counted towards the final score in the six count four tournament format. The final two golfers in the six lineup were Matt Plunkett and Gunnar Doyle. Plunkett finished with a 77, while Doyle posted a score of 78.
"It shows that even though we haven't been outdoors to practice or play since last fall they can continue to get better through hard work and believing in each other," added Watts. "We have a lot of golf to play this spring, but what we watched today was something special. We look forward to our next event in a few weeks and hopefully continue to make lots of birdies."
Florida Atlantic's top scorer was Sully Zagerman, who carded a 68, while Caleb Sibley fired a 3-under par score of 69. The final two golfers in the four count finished with a pair of 2-over par rounds of 74.
Also competing for the Black Knights were Brian Stecker, Max Messner and Justin Williamson. Stecker shot a 77, while Williamson finished with a 76. Messner signed his card with a score of 82.
Next up for the Black Knights is the three-day Hyat Invitational in Jacksonville, starting on Feb. 24.
