October 27, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Army West Point women's cross country team placed fifth at the Patriot League Championship at Bucknell on Saturday.
The Black Knights were led by a strong performance by freshman Shelby Piccinic, who finished 13th with a time of 22:21.9. The rookie's team leading finish earned her the honor of Second Team All-Patriot League.
Army had three top-25 finishers in the race, as junior Mika Andrews placed 18th at 22:41.0 and junior Bethany Nunnery finished 25th with a time of 22:49.4.
Coach's Corner: Head Coach Mike Smith -
"We did not have the type of day that I thought we could have had today. We were tentative and did not do a good job of handling the conditions and that cost us some key places that we didn't make up. As it turned out, we were only a few points out of third place and that was a realistic possibility, but we were not committed enough to make it happen when it came time to dig down and compete. It's a disappointing outcome, but one we will learn from. Shelby Piccinic did a great job of managing the race. She got out in it and never backed down. I was proud of her effort. She has a very bright future for us. The other outstanding effort today came from Mika Andrews. She did exactly what we told her to do and kept charging the whole race. She has been a solid performer all year and runs to her potential every time out."
