WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's tennis team got back into the win column Friday afternoon at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center, as the Black Knights defeated the NJIT Highlanders 4-3.
"We really needed to win one for us," said Associate Head Coach Randy Rowley. "What was great about this was it was a 4-3 match that we had to fight to win and we really earned it. We're 1-0 today and we'll have to get after it again tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army opened up with another strong doubles performance to clinch the opening match point.
- The reliable duo of David Mitchell and David Gorshein provided the clincher at No. 2 after winning a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreak.
- Singles play opened up with freshman Alejandro Quiros cruising to a straight sets victory at No. 5 to give Army a 2-0 lead.
- After NJIT got on the board with a win at No. 2, Anant Mundra would put the Black Knights one point away from the clinch with his win at No. 6.
- The Highlanders would rally to keep it tight with wins at No.'s 4 and 3 to make it all come down to court No. 1.
- Myles Conlin would seal the deal for Army with a tough 7-5, 7-5 victory in the top flight.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army won its fifth doubles point of the spring season.
- The Black Knights are now 8-2 all-time against the Highlanders.
- Freshman Alejandro Quiros earned his first collegiate duals victory.
