Army Travels To Boston For Battle In Beantown
September 20, 2019 | Women's Cross Country
BOSTON, Mass. –The Army West Point women's cross country team competed at the Coast to Coast Battle In Beantown at Boston College on Friday.
The event was the first competition of the season for many of the returning athletes and saw sophomore Shelby Piccinic lead the team with a 65th place finish. The team placed 14th overall.
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"I am disappointed in the outcome for our women today. We made some mistakes out there that cost us a chance to finish higher. We were in the top 10 halfway through the race; we just fell apart coming home to the finish. Having said that, I think we have some really good women on this team and I will not be surprised if we make some big improvements going forward.
We were prepared physically, but I think we were a little rusty mentally and that cost us. The good news is that those things can be fixed by getting out there again and competing. We will do that again in two weeks and put together a better team performance. On the bright side, there were quite a few silver linings in how some of our individuals performed. Allie Gibbs did a nice job of hanging in there. She has probably never been in a race as competitive as this, so it was a positive that she did not panic and crumble. Shelby Piccinic got the rust off after quite a long layoff from racing and put herself in the mix early. I was encouraged by her strong start. And Mika Andrews ran a fairly consistent race and with very few mistakes. With some more sharpening she will continue to improve. All of those things don't show up in the results, but are indicative of bigger and better things to come.
I know the women are disappointed in the outcome but I think they gave great effort today and I know that they have the resolve to put together a better race next time out. We will stick to the process and keep moving forward."
