American Hands Army First Home Loss of 2019
September 28, 2019 | Volleyball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - After winning its first seven matches on its home court, the Army West Point volleyball team was handed its first home loss of the year in a matchup with American on Saturday.
After a dramatic victory over service rival Navy on Friday, Army (9-5) struggled to get things going, ultimately falling in four sets by a score of 3-1.Â
"We had to play the top- 2 teams in the conference back to back with not much rest. By far, we had the toughest opening weekend in the conference and we are okay with that.," Head coach Alma Kovaci Lee said. "We will continue to learn and work on managing emotions and work to keep playing high level volleyball at all times. We played some great volleyball against American but we couldn't sustain it for long."
Army was slow out of the gate, struggling to keep the ball in play in the first set before falling 25-17. The team got on track in the second, reversing course with a .500 attack percentage in the frame. Emmy Barnhorst was superb in the set, recording four kills on five attempts. The team also added four blocks in the set, led by Hannah Presley's three block assists. American regained control of the match in the third set, converting a .455 hitting percentage after struggling on that front in the second. Helena Elbaek was dominant with six kills in the set. Army's struggles remained in the fourth, hitting at just a .021 percentage. That was enough for American to close out the match 25-19.
Seniors Sydney Morriss and Allie Strong were the team's only double-digit killers, recording 10 apiece. Ana Oglivie recorded 19 digs and Hannah Presley led the way with 24 assists in the match.Â
Army finished the first conference weekend of the season at 1-1. The team has another quick turnaround as they match up with Marist in non-conference action on Tuesday before resuming conference play on Saturday against Holy Cross.
"The team is committed to high level of play and we look forward to getting back in the gym on Monday and proving ourselves again on Tuesday vs. Marist"
