November 12, 2021 | Men's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. - In its Fall season finale, Army West Point men's rugby earned the program's first win over Lindenwood University, considered one of the best team's in the country, by a score of 26-17. Senior captains Matt Meehan and Nolan Green combined for three tries to lift Army to the result.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing in its first home contest on Warrior Field since October 2, Army fed off the energy of the home crowd to charge out of the locker room and build an early lead on Lindenwood.
Dom Tiange scored the first try of the contest for Army in the sixth minute to give the Brothers an early 5-0 advantage. Thanks to a Lindenwood knock-on, Army elected to kick for touch. Shortly after the line out five-meters from the try-zone, Tianga was able to make his way in for a try, the first of the match. Lindenwood answered with a penalty kick score to cut the lead to 5-3 at the 14-minute mark.
Army quickly made their way back down the pitch and Matt Meehan found a hole for another Army try at 16:20. Sean McNulty followed with the kick to give the Black Knights a 12-3 lead.
After an obstruction penalty against Lindenwood five-meters from the zone, Army got the ball down the line to Nolan Green for another try at 22:20. McNulty's kick split the uprights and Army built on its lead, now at 19-3. Lindenwood scored again right before half to cut the lead to 19-10 at the break.
Army continued to battle at the line and finally got Meehan in for another try at 49:19 in the second half. Army's lead rose to 26-17 with the senior's second try of the night.
The Brothers dug in defensively for the remaining time. Even though Lindenwood was able to sneak in another try score at 69:20, the Black Knights continued to play together and play strong up front to preserve the lead, going on to earn a 26-17 result.
