June 02, 2021 | Men's Rugby
NEW ORLEANS -- In the program's first 7's action since 2019, Army West Point men's rugby stormed their way to a third place finish at the Collegiate Rugby Championships. After receiving a No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the 28-team tournament, Army began its run to the semifinal round with a win over the fourth-seeded Lander University.
Firstie Tiaan Mosconi began the scoring for the Black Knights, giving the squad a 7-0 lead after a try and a successful conversion. Michael Amberg, Matthew Meehan, Scharl Du Toit and Nolan Green all added tries to give Army plenty of room to hold off Lander and secure the 31-5 victory.
It was more of the same in the quarterfinal round as the Black Knights stormed their way to another 31-5 victory, this time over second-seeded Air Force. In this contest the Falcons struck first, getting their only try three minutes into the contest. Maxwell Sackett tied up the game with a try in the fourth minute followed by a Tiaan Mosconi conversion that gave Army a lead they would not surrender. Scharl du Toit, KoiKoi Nelligan and Nolan Green all made it past the goal line to score tries for Army.
In the semifinal round, Army fell to first-seeded Life University 36-19 for the team's first loss of the season. Amberg and Green continued their strong play with tries, while Mosconi also chipped in a try and two conversions of his own.
Army returned to the pitch later that day for the third-place match against fellow first-seed Davenport University. After falling behind 10-0 early in the match, Army battled it's way back after two tries from Green. A successful conversion by Firstie Jonny Haley on the second try gave Army the 12-10 lead. The Black Knights were able to hold off Davenport the rest of the way to earn a third-place finish.
