Women's Tennis Opens Season with Matches at Syracuse, Dartmouth

SYRACUSE, N.Y. / HANOVER, N.H. – In its first action of the 2022 Spring season, Army women's tennis dropped its season-opening matches with the Syracuse Orange and Dartmouth Big Green, 6-1 and 5-2, respectively. Justine Dondonay, Elizabeth Gilbert and Cooper Jackson all earned wins on singles courts to lead the Black Knights. Jackson and Paige Herremans earned the lone win for Army on the doubles courts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights battled on the doubles courts but surrendered the point after the Orange took two courts. Army's top doubles pair of Paola Bou and Sophie McKenzie came close to earning its first win of the season but fell in its match on the first singles court, 6-4.
Elizabeth Gilbert performed well in the season opener, earning her first dual-match win of the season. Gilbert, a junior, picked up a win and a point for the Black Knights on the third singles court. Gilbert withstood her opponent's comeback effort to earn a 7-6 win in the first set. Her opponent evened up the match with a 7-5 second set win, but Gilbert took the point with a 10-5 win in the tiebreaker.
Senior Paola Bou played a competitive match on the first singles court. She pushed the first set to a tiebreak before falling 7-6 to her opponent. Bou would fall in another hard-fought set, 6-3.
Julia Kelly put up a fight on the sixth singles court, winning five games in her first set. The plebe eventually fell 7-5 in the first game before losing a close second set 6-4.
Over in New Hampshire, the other half of the team came up short in a hard-fought match with the Big Green. Freshman Cooper Jackson competed her way to wins on the singles and doubles courts in her first collegiate dual-match.The doubles win, a 7-6 result, came alongside classmate, Paige Herremans. Justine Dondonay earned the other singles win in the fourth pairing, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Senior captain Caroline Vincent narrowly lost in her matchup at the second singles pairing by a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 result.
