Men’s Rugby Falls to Navy, 27-14
November 06, 2022 | Men's Rugby
ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Army West Point men's rugby suffered its first loss of the season with a 27-14 defeat to Navy on the road. The Black Knights move to 7-1 in the fall while the Mids have posted a 10-0 start.
In an ever-intense battle between service academies, Navy was able to strike first in the 13th minute after working slowly up the field before touching down for a try. A successful conversion made it a 7-0 game, but Army would not be denied much further.
Six minutes after the conversion, Dom Tianga surged in for a try after the Black Knights were set up with possession downfield. Jonny Haley tied the score with a conversion following the Tianga score. The Mids added a penalty kick in the closing minutes of the half to take a 10-7 advantage into the break.
Navy extended the lead five minutes into the second half with another penalty kick, before touching down for a try five minutes later to make it a 20-7 game following the conversion. The Black Knights did not go down without a fight, battling back with a try with 15 minutes left to play.
It took a moment of brilliance from Lucas Pattinson, weaving through several Navy players before a burst to dive into the try-zone. Haley knocked in his second conversion to make the score 20-14. However, the Mids were able to answer with a final try of their own to secure the victory at home.
