WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point women's rugby closed out the regular season with a 40-17 victory over Sacred Heart at Anderson Rugby Complex.
The Black Knights finish the NIRA schedule with a 6-1 record and will advance to the NIRA National Semifinals next weekend at Harvard.
Playing its final home game of the season, Army got off to a dream start scoring a try in the third minute of the game. Kaylee Cargile helped the push to the try-line before Marissa Wollbrinck offloaded to Sophia Linder for the score and 5-0 lead. After assisting on multiple tries this season, it marked Linder's first try scored of the season.
The Pioneers would answer swiftly, tying the score at five in the ninth minute of the contest. Army responded right back, with Cargile scoring her second try in as many games to put the Black Knights ahead 12-5 after a successful conversion from Alissa Eisenhart.
Later on, Army moved the ball beautifully to get down the field, utilizing the entire width to get into the right-corner of the pitch. Moving back left, the try was eventually touched down by Sydney Schaaf at the 29-minute mark. Eisenhart knocked in an impressive conversion to make it 19-5 at the half.
The Black Knights quickly extended their advantage in the second half, with Cecilia Ollis scooping an errant pass from the Pioneers before being taken down for a penalty try to make the score 26-5. Sacred Heart made things interesting with a pair of tries to cut it down to a 26-17 lead with twenty minutes remaining.
After Army blocked a kick forward, Jeannie Skidmore got in for her second try of the campaign with 18 minutes left to play. Codi Butt scored a highlight-reel try to put the game to rest, as Eisenhart made good on her final two conversions to make the final score 40-17.
Army will finish as the three-seed in NIRA at 6-1 behind 5-2 Harvard, as the NIRA standings seed based off points and bonuses earned through the fixtures rather than win-loss records.
