Women’s Tennis Upsets Second-Seeded Navy in Patriot League Semifinal
April 23, 2022 | Women's Tennis
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Cooper Jackson's straight-set win at No. 3 singles clinched the third-seeded Army West Point women's tennis team's 4-0 win over No. 2 Navy in the Patriot League Semifinal on Saturday afternoon at Lehigh.
The Black Knights (24-9, 5-2 PL) will now face off against top-seeded Boston University (14-7, 5-0 PL) in the Championship Match on Sunday, April 24 at 12 p.m. Army will be looking to secure its first conference crown since the 2019 campaign.
The action between the Cadets and the Mids (22-6, 4-1 PL) was close to start off, as doubles play came down to the final court. Though Navy opened up the action with a 6-2 win at the third spot in the lineup, the tandem of Jackson and Paige Herremans answered back with a win on the second court. With an early lead on the line, the senior team of Caroline Vincent and Stephanie Dolehide stepped up with a 7-5 tiebreaker win at No. 1 doubles to put Army ahead.
Both teams continued to battle in singles play, as the opening sets were split fairly evenly across the board. Eventually, Herremans added her second triumph of the day when she took down her opponent in straight sets at the sixth flight. Paola Bou then added a win of her own at No. 4 singles to put the team on the verge of clinching.
With their postseason hopes on the line, Jackson came through with her straight-set win to send the team to the championship match and officially pull off the upset.
The final match of the Patriot League Tournament will be a battle, as Army narrowly dropped a 4-2 result to the Terriers earlier this season.
