Volleyball Sweeps Loyola Maryland in Patriot League Quarterfinal Match

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The fourth-seeded Army Black Knights hosted the fifth-seeded Loyola Maryland Greyhounds at Gillis Field House Tuesday night for one of two quarterfinal matchups taking place that evening as part of the 2024 Patriot League Volleyball Tournament. The Black Knights controlled the match from the first whistle, sweeping the Greyhounds with set scores of 25-20, 25-12, and 25-18 and securing their place in Friday's semifinals in Hamilton, N.Y.
The Black Knights dominated the serving game, notching 12 service aces in the contest to Loyola Maryland's four. Army led the Greyhounds in every category with 43 kills, eight blocks, 41 assists, 47 digs, and 63.0 total points.
Mackenzie Lynch, Chloe Murakami, and Juliette Myrick all tied for the most kills on the team with eight kills apiece. Myrick led the trio and the match with a .700 hitting percentage with only one error in ten total swings.
Nicole Stroud led Army's back row with ten total digs while Tatum Grimes put up a powerful block against Loyola Maryland's hitters with a match-high five block assists.

Although Loyola Maryland scored the first point in all three sets, Army's squad never failed to find their stride quickly as they battled with the Greyhounds.
A Kingsley Wallace kill as well as back-to-back blocks for Michelle Parker, first with Mackenzie Lynch and then once more with Wallace saw Army open up a 4-1 lead in the first frame, extending up to am 8-4 lead as the Black Knights put their foot on the gas.
The Black Knights' aggressive offense maintained Army's lead as the set wore on, keeping the Greyhounds from gaining more than two points in a row until a kill from Myrick brough the match to a 20-14 differential in Army's favor.
Three straight points for Loyola Maryland brought the points difference to only three points but kills from Lynch and Grimes, followed by a block from the same duo clinched the first set in Army's favor.
The Black Knights claimed a 4-1 lead for the second time in the match as the second set began, but the Greyhounds drew within one point on a service ace at 5-4 to Army. Kills from Wallace, along with points from Juliette Myrick and Chloe Murakami gave Army the edge once again.
A quick kill from Parker in the middle at 12-7 swung the momentum back to Army's favor and set Army up to claim an eight-point lead as the Black Knights put up a 4-1 run.
After Army went up to a 19-11 advantage with a kill from Grimes and the Greyhounds notched a kill in response, Army put together a 6-0 run to claim set two 25-12.
Two service aces from Murakami helped Army earn a 3-1 lead in the third frame but the Greyhounds bounced back to draw even with Army at 7-7 and claimed a brief lead at 10-9 before the Black Knights could gather themselves and mount a counterattack.
A six-point run comprised of a kill for Wallace, a block from Grimes and Myrick, a kill from Grimes, and three service aces for Naomi Chinchar gave Army an 18-13 advantage.
Loyola Marymount drew within two points at 20-18 in Army's favor but with the energy in the building palpably on Army's side, the Black Knights claimed five consecutive points to clinch the third set 25-18 and their quarterfinal win to keep their playoff dreams alive.
