Women’s Tennis Clinches Top Seed with Win at BU
April 19, 2025 | Women's Tennis
WINCHESTER, Mass. – The Army West Point Women's Tennis regular season come to a dramatic conclusion Saturday evening, with the Black Knights coming away with a nail-biting 4-3 team win at Boston University and clinching the No. 1 seed at the upcoming Patriot League Championships.
With the match deadlocked at 3-3, Vennmukiil Mathivanan broke serve on singles court No. 4 to win her third set 6-4, and propel Army to the team win.
The Black Knights finish the regular season 22-5 and a perfect 8-0 in the Patriot League. Army won 15 matches by shutout, including five conference matches. The squad also won more team matches (8) than they lost team points in league play (6).
Army won Saturday's doubles point, thanks to a pair of 6-4 wins on doubles Courts No. 2 and 3. All three courts factoring into doubles however foreshadowed singles play, with three of the six singles matches—and two of the Black Knights' three singles wins—taking three sets to decide.
Ylan Duong recovered from a second set loss on singles Court No. 6 to prevail 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, while Emma Sy handled her match on singles Court No. 5 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. This would set up Mathivanan's clinching win, a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 affair lasting just short of two hours.
The win avenges one of two conference losses for Army a season ago. The Black Knights also dispatched a familiar foe in conference title hunts, with Army and BU having combined for 18 of the past 19 league tournament championships.
