Women’s Tennis Takes Star Match Over Navy

WEST POINT, N.Y. – There aren't many times in life when second is better than first.

But for Army West Point Women's Tennis, one of these moments was experienced Saturday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

The Black Knights defeated Navy 4-1 and sung their alma mater second. The match—part of the Star Series presented by USAA—gives Army a 12-9 lead in the all-sport competition.

Army improves to 19-5 on the season overall and 5-0 in Patriot League play.

The Black Knights set tone Saturday with a doubles point win, without being broken across the three doubles matches. Jenna Sabile and Julia Kelly rattled off four consecutive game wins on court No. 2 to win 6-1, before Isabella Brilliant and Madison Smith clinched the doubles point moments later on court No. 3 with a 6-2 win.

Army dropped a singles match on court No. 1 but faced little additional resistance. Jenna Sabile, Vennmukiil Mathivanan and Emma Sy secured decisive wins on singles courts No. 2-4 to secure the team win.

The win snaps a three-match losing streak in Women's Tennis star matches—albeit with a pair of postseason wins over Navy sandwiched across that stretch.

Army faces Lehigh this upcoming Friday, in Bethlehem. A 3:00 p.m. start is scheduled. The team is back at home April 13 vs. Bucknell for senior day.
