Men’s Rugby Dispatches Southern Virginia Saturday
September 27, 2025 | Men's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. – A new look Army West Point men's rugby lineup delivered the same dominant effort Saturday, knocking off Rugby East foe Southern Virginia 51-25 Saturday at Anderson Rugby Complex. With Army leading in the waning moments of the match, the fixture was ruled official early due to a SVU player shortage, and the Black Knights were declared the winner with 71:03 played.
The Black Knights move to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference action, while also grabbing their second win at home in 2025-26.
"I thought overall we had a strong performance today, especially considering we fielded a younger and less experienced team. Our attacking shape showed real promise and capability, which is encouraging for where we want to go. On the defensive side, there's plenty to learn—our accuracy and detail weren't where they need to be, and Southern Virginia was able to expose us in those areas. But that's part of the process, and today was a valuable step forward in our journey," said head coach Matt Sherman.
For Army, eight members of the first XV made their first career A team starts (John Benson, Liam Walsh, Jordan Thompson, Porter Kuebler, Kolbet Schrichte, Nick Trout, Kegan Lynch and Ilen Menon).
Benson, Thompson and Kuebler would each record their first career tries, as would Phil Roll off the bench.
Army never trailed in the match, but the visiting Knights did remain within striking distance for much of the first half, with a penalty and try scored inside 20 minutes.
Benson stole the show in the opening 40 minutes, finding paydirt three times for his first career points. That, alongside tries from George Hemmen on a pitch from Cort Schmidlin, Hemmen, Lynch on a pitch from Dakota Wagner, and Kuebler in the first half would put the Black Knights ahead 34-15 at the half.
After the half, Thompson found the try zone in the 43rd minute and Richard Corbett III followed in the 48th. With amble breathing room secured, Roll's try in the 64th sandwiched a pair of late SVU tries.
Corbett also added a pair of conversions Saturday.
