WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (October 27) – Army West Point football junior kicker Dawson Jones has been named one of the "Stars of the Week" by the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award and Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
It's the second major award won by Jones this week, after being named American Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
In Army's come-from-behind win at Tulsa, Jones connected on field goals from 51 and 50 yards, with the latter coming with no time remaining to give the Black Knights a 38-25 win. The kicks were tied for the seventh and 10th-longest in program history, and represented the first time in program history a kicker made multiple field goals of at least 50 yards.
Jones is 7-for-9 on field goal attempts this season. In Week 6 vs. Tulane, Jones hit a 25-yard kick to knock off Tulane 20-17 at Michie Stadium Preserved by USAA.
Army improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference with the win over Tulsa.
The Lou Groza Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
