WEST POINT, N.Y. – Yesenia Morales, a junior on the Army West Point women's rugby team, has been named a finalist for the MA Sorensen Award, the Goff Rugby Report announced on Monday night.
The award is named after MaryAnn Sorensen, a groundbreaking USA Rugby player and member of the 1991 Women's Rugby World Cup winning team, and is awarded to the top collegiate women's rugby player in the United States.
Morales was a major threat on both sides of the field during the fall, helping lead the Black Knights to the semifinal round of the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association playoffs. A defensive cornerstone, the Milwaukee native was second on the team with 76 tackles. She was also dangerous in the attacking game, recording six tries, seven assists and 30 total points. Following the conclusion of the fall season, Morales was named All-NIRA.
The other finalists include Tiahna Padilla (Harvard), Freda Tafuna (Lindenwood) and Telesi Uhatafe (Southern Nazarene).
The winner of MA Sorensen Award will be named in the next couple of weeks, and the award will officially be presented at the home of the sponsoring organization, the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, Wash., at a gala event in June.
