WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point Athletics Department and the West Point Association of Graduates announced today that the head coaching position for Army West Point Men's Tennis is now titled the Michael M. Purpura '91 Head Men's Tennis Coach, following a substantial gift from Michael & Betsy Purpura.
The Purpura family, through their generous commitment, has created the Purpura Family Men's Tennis Endowment to support the continued growth and success of the Army West Point Men's Tennis program.
The funds raised will go toward enhancing all aspects of the cadet-athlete experience, providing long-term resources for program development, recruiting, and competitive excellence.
A 1991 graduate of the United States Military Academy, Michael Purpura was a four-year letterwinner on the Men's Tennis Team and served as Captain in his senior year.
Following graduation, Purpura served as a field artillery officer in the United States Army and then attended law school. Mike's legal career has taken him to the highest levels of Government and private practice; significantly, he has served as an adviser to two United States Presidents.
Purpura credits West Point with shaping his lifelong commitment to service and leadership.
"Every opportunity I have had in my career is directly traceable to West Point. How can that be repaid? My time as a member of the Men's Tennis Team was a large part of my West Point experience; beyond the lessons of competition, the relationships I formed with my teammates, coaches, and officer representatives are enduring and meaningful."
"Coach Rowley has built a program rooted in integrity, resilience, and competitive spirit," Purpura added. "Betsy and I hope that this gift will help the cadet-athletes of today and the future to have the same experience I did."
"Mike and Betsy's generosity is transformational for our program," said Head Men's Tennis Coach Randy Rowley. "Their belief in West Point and in Army Tennis strengthens everything we do for our cadet-athletes. This gift will allow us to continue developing young men who excel both on the court and as future Army leaders."
"This investment in Army Men's Tennis is a powerful reflection of the enduring bond of the Long Gray Line," said Army West Point Director of Athletics Tom Theodorakis. "Mike and Betsy Purpura exemplify the values of West Point, and their generosity will have a lasting impact on our cadet-athletes and the future of our tennis program. We are deeply grateful for their support and proud to announce this historic gift."
