Track and Field's Nathan Davis To Compete in USATF Championships in New York City

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point track and field alumnus Nathan Davis ('26) will showcase his skills on the national stage after qualifying for the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
"Reaching this milestone is much greater than I," Davis said. "I am just a runner and a competitor. By competing on this stage, I hope it shows everyone who wears the Army jersey that they are capable of more; all you need is to believe in yourself."
Davis completed his final outdoor season with the Black Knights, putting up an impressive showing at the NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field East Regional and NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The East Greenbush, N.Y., native made his mark in Oregon as he secured Second Team All-American honors after finishing 11th in the nation in the men's 3000m steeplechase in the championship heat of the event, allowing him to qualify for the USATF Championships.
Currently, Davis is ranked No. 13 in the United States and No. 88 in the world in the 3000m steeplechase.
"Nathan had a lot of success this spring and although he set records and won a lot of races," head track and field coach Michael Smith said. "Despite that, it is my sense that he has some unfinished business. He didn't reach all his goals and is determined to finish the season with better results. I know that he feels he can run faster than the 8:27.48 time that he ran at the NCAA meet in June."
To prepare for the meet, Davis competed in the Sunset Tour Invite in Los Angeles, where he finished in 12th place in his signature event. Now, he will continue training at West Point and East Greenbush to prepare for the USATF Championships on July 23-26.
"He has a mature focus when it comes to these competitions," Smith said. "He doesn't back down from anyone and is extremely confident in his ability, so if things line up for him and he executes well, I like his chances to improve and see a strong finish."
The meet will take place at Icahn Stadium in New York City, the first time the USATF Outdoor Championships have been held at this venue in the meet's history. With the meet close to the Academy and his hometown, Davis will have a large support group present at the meet.
"I've got some friends and many family members coming to watch," Davis said. "They will get to see a competitive side of me that they may not have seen before. Plus, with everything they have done for me, I have no choice but to leave it all out on the track for them to see."
As he competes on the national stage starting on July 23, Davis plans to attack the meet the same way he did as a cadet-athlete and hopes to represent his former teammates and the Academy as a whole well.
"The USATF Championship means the start of a new chapter," Davis said. "But my mindset for the meet has not changed from any other meet. I am competing to beat others. Ultimately, I'm excited for this opportunity, and as I compete, it is my duty to be relentless for my Army teammates.
For fans who cannot make it to New York City for the USATF Championships, the meet will stream live and on demand on NBC and USATF.tv.
