Navy Edges Army For Golf Star

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Anthony Kim and Matt Philiewon matches but Navy claimed the remaining five points and beat Army, 7-4, Sunday in the annual "Star" match at Naval Academy Golf Course.
The Ryder Cup formatted event was knotted at 2 following four, four-ball matches before Navy earned the star with strong singles play.
"We just didn't get the job done," said Army head golf coach Brian Watts. "We didn't play well and anytime Navy opened the door for us to win a hole, we just never took advantage of that. We had many opportunities we just didn't play execute golf shots. We have to work on our match play strategy; the guys just don't have enough experience in that format."
Philie collected his second point of that weekend with a 4&3 win over Peter Reilly. The singles win came after he teamed with David Marxfor a four-ball point on Saturday.
"Matt has been playing exceptionally well," said Watts. "He is really managing his golf ball well and making the correct decisions on the course."
Kim lost a point during four-ball play on Saturday but posted a 4&2 win over Collier Jones.
"Anthony has been struggling but he was able to win his point today," said Watts. "And that was great to see."
Navy won the first two matches as Drew Selby beat Brandon Baerwaldt and August Jonas edged Ethan Johnson. After Kim's victory, Tyler Kuhn topped David Marx and David Hall beat Eric Park. Tim Shield beat William Parkto close the match.
"Overall, our short game was not sharp," said Watts. "We just didn't get the job done and I take part of the blame for that, I just didn't prepare them for match play."
Army will continue its fall season Oct. 15 and 16 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn County Club in Jonesborough, Tenn.
