Army vs. West Virginia Results
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Sophomore Richard Calvin set a personal-best 590 air rifle score in sharing runner-up honors for Army's lone highlight in its match against GARC (Great America Rifle Conference) defending champion West Virginia at the WVU Rifle Range Saturday afternoon.
The No. 2-ranked Mountaineers defeated No. 6 Army, 4693-4637, in their home debut with a winning score that is 11 shots off their school record. The loss dropped the Black Knights to 2-1 overall and in the GARC, and West Virginia stretched its unbeaten mark to 3-0 and 2-0 in the conference. The Mountaineers swept both disciplines, defeating the Black Knights in air rifle, 2364-2326, and smallbore, 2329-2311.
West Virginia's Petra Zublasing was the high shooter, firing a collegiate-record 600 in air rifle and a 586 smallbore as three of the top four individual places were claimed by Mountaineers.
Senior All-America Kelly Buck led the Black Knights in smallbore, firing a 581 to tie West Virginia's Meelis Kiisk for third place honors. She also registered Army's second-highest match score of 584 in air rifle.
Michael Matthews (577) and Joseph Todaro (575) rounded out Army's scoring unit in air rifle, with William Mengon (579), Todaro (579) and Calvin (572) combining with Buck on the smallbore team. Calvin nipped his former air rifle mark of 589 set last spring at the GARC Championships.
The Black Knights are idle this upcoming week, returning to action Nov. 5 when they make their home debut at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center hosting the President's Trophy match. Army is the defending champions.
