OXFORD, Miss. - Senior Kelly Buck was the high shooter in smalbore, and sophomore Richard Calvin led the way in air rifle as Army's rifle team made its season and GARC (Great America Rifle Conference) debut on a winning note Saturday. The Black Knights romped to a 4663-4605 win over Memphis at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford, Miss.
Army's 4663 aggregate score is its highest mark since the 2007-08 season, while its 2335 score in smallbore is just two points off the school record also set that year.
Buck, a first team All-American in smallbore, led the way in that discipline with a 589, which is just two points shy of her school record 591 she fired last year against West Virginia. The Army senior, who has been the Black Knights' top shooter since her sophomore year, followed with a 580 in air rifle.
Sophomores Michael Matthews and Joseph Todaro posted personal bests firing identical 584s in smallbore with junior Will Mengon's 578 rounding out Army's counting unit. Matthews nipped his former mark by two points, and Todaro bettered his by 10 points.
Calvin turned in Army's highest score of 585 in air rifle with Matthews trailing by a point with a 584. Zachary Wells, the third sophomore member of the counting unit, added a 579 as the Black Knights combined for a 2328.
Army (1-0, 1-0 GARC) outpointed Memphis by 41 points in smallbore (2335-2294) and nipped the Tigers by 17 points in air rifle (2328-2311) to complete the sweep.
"I am very pleased with our first match of the season," commented head coach Ron Wigger as Army claimed its season opener for the 10th straight year.
The Black Knights (1-0) face a tough challenge Sunday when they take on host Ole Miss (1-0). The Rebels are coming off of their first-ever win in school history over perennial powerhouse Alaska-Fairbanks, 4648-4645, along with setting a school air rifle mark of 2347.
Sunday's match is being streamlined on Ole Miss' website at www.olemiss.sports.
