Hofstra Defeats Army, 26-10

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Army wrestling team wrapped up its 2010-11 dual match schedule on Tuesday evening as the Black Knights dropped a 26-10 decision to Hofstra at Mack Sports Complex.
Hofstra, which has won five straight matches and 10 of its last 11 contests, improves to 14-4-1 on the season. Army, meanwhile, ends its dual match slate with an overall record of 7-9.
Sophomore Collin Wittmeyer was one of three Black Knights to win a bout against the Pride as the second-year grappler took an 11-2 major decision from Matt Spataro in the 174-pound matchup. Wittmeyer was credited with a pair of takedowns and one near fall during the dominating performance.
Senior Casey Thome won his 13th straight bout, defeating Vicente Varela, 4-1, at 141 pounds. Thome accumulated more than two minutes of riding time en route to the victory.
Junior Jimmy Rafferty rounded out Army's list of winners on the night, scoring a 6-2 win over Tyler Banks in the 157-pound bout. Rafferty, piled up nearly two minutes of riding time, posted two takedowns in his win.
Hofstra, which jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two bouts on the strength of a pair of technical falls, won the other seven matches to secure the victory.
Army returns to action during the weekend of March 4-5 when the Black Knights travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to compete at the EIWA Championships.
Match Notes: Army falls to 6-10-1 all-time versus Hofstra ... Casey Thome leads Army with a 27-9 overall record and a 14-2 mark in dual matches ... Thome's win was his 110th career victory, moving him into a tie with Nick Mauldin (USMA '91) for fifth place on Army's all-time list ... Collin Wittmeyer's major decision was his second of the season ... Wittmeyer improves to 7-5 in dual matches this year, the third-most dual wins of any Army wrestler.
