ALBANY, N.Y. – The road woes continued for Army women’s tennis on Thursday when the Black Knights dropped a 4-3 decision to Albany at the Tri-City Tennis Club. Army drops to 11-5 overall and 0-4 on the road this season. The Danes improved to 7-4 in 2012 with the win.
The loss ended a historic streak for the Black Knights, who had boasted a 17-0 record against the Danes entering Thursday’s match. Albany was one of just five teams Army had faced at least 10 times and never lost to, and ranked among those five schools in total wins behind Hofstra, who Army has defeated 22 straight times.
The doubles point proved to be the deciding factor as both teams captured three singles victories apiece. UA won at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to clinch the point, including an extended match at the top spot. Army doubles pair Della Taylor and Elle Taylor dropped a tough 9-7 battle to Rocio Lopez and Livia Gherman in the deciding match.
Highlighting the singles play was sophomore Jamila Paul, who battled back at the No. 2 spot after dropping her first set to Kirsten Scott. Paul rebounded with wins in the second (6-3) and third (6-1) sets to capture her fifth win in a row, including her seventh victory in her last eight tries.
Freshman Maya Parker also extended her winning streak to five matches with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 against Aubrey Brooks. The Army plebe improved to 5-0 in duals this season.
Army will enjoy a midseason break and will return in just over two weeks to host Hofstra and Manhattan on March 23.
