BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army men’s tennis took another hit on a disappointing weekend on the road, falling at Patriot League foe Lehigh 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in its conference regular season finale. The Black Knights fell at Navy on Saturday before the setback to the Mountain Hawks, putting their conference championship seeding up in the air with a 4-2 league mark.
Army (13-11, 4-2) started off on a high note, taking two-of-three doubles matches from Lehigh (10-7, 2-1 PL). Sophomores Asika Isoh and Henry Jang-Milsten won their team-leading 18th match of the year with an 8-6 defeat of Ben Gilman and Matt Savran at No. 1. Juniors Rashad Shelton and Alex Holland teamed together for the fifth time this season to top Andrew Krentz and Timur Chernykh, 8-5 at No. 3, for their fourth win.
Freshman Peter Sienko was the Black Knights’ lone winner in singles play, defeating Daniel Goldblum, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. The victory was Sienko’s fifth straight, as he finishes his first season of conference regular-season play with a perfect 5-0 mark.
The team loss halted Army’s winning streak against Lehigh at 28 matches which spanned 26 years, as the Mountain Hawk’s last series win prior to Sunday was in 1986. The Black Knights drop to 39-3 all-time against Lehigh.
Army last finished conference play with a 4-2 record in 2009, when it earned a No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, advancing to the title match against Navy before falling to the Midshipmen. Seeding for the 2012 tournament will be announced in two weeks. Navy clinched the No. 1 seed after defeating Army on Saturday to move to 5-0 in league matches.
The Black Knights will have six days to prepare for their next match as Boston University visits West Point on April 21.
