WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army men’s cross country team fell to Cornell 15-49 in a dual meet from the West Point Golf Course on Friday evening.
Trevor Lafontaine finished first for the Black Knights for the second straight race. His 8K time of 25:08.81 earned him a seventh place finish.
“I was thinking Trevor would be right there, unfortunately, he didn’t mix up that top pack, but this is just going to help us fuel our passion to work harder and really get in shape for those later championship races at the end of the season,” assistant coach Shannon O’Brien said.
Army’s No. 2 runner was Tom Girardot, who finished 10th overall with a time of 25:19.92, followed by Cody Barger in 11th place with a time of 25:21.35.
Andrew Beck took 12th place, followed by freshman Nick Causey, Matt Bearden and captain Nathan Fisher to round out Army’s top seven.
“A few guys came off of really high mileage weeks, so that could be a reason why they’re a little bit tired, but overall it was a good day,” O’Brien said.
The Big Red entered Friday’s race ranked eighth in the region. They finished the afternoon with an average time of 24:47.62, besting the Black Knights’ 25:22.61 average.
Also competing for Army was Andreas Kellas, Ryan Smathers and Brown Bailey, who took 22nd, 23rd and 24th places, respectively, as well as freshman Dan Beck who rounded out the top 25.
Army will continue the 2014 season next week, traveling to historic Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. for the Iona Meet of Champions. The men are slated to get underway at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.
