WEST POINT, N.Y - - Alyssa Gestl and Marvin Lewis tied for third place in air rifle as No. 12-ranked Army finished two points off its season mark compiling a 2338 en route to suffering a 4665-4611 defeat to No. 10 Ohio State Saturday afternoon at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
Lewis ' 588 was a career high breaking his mark of 587 set during the fall against Ole Miss, and Gestl's 588 is just two shy of her career mark that was also shot against the Rebels as the Army duo finished two points behind winner Drew Cheezum.
Danielle Cuomo (585) and Allen Solida (577) rounded out Army's four-man squad that combined for a 2338, 10 points behind Ohio State's 2348, in finishing just shy of the season mark of 2340 set in the fall in a triangular with Memphis and MIT.
Elizabeth Mostert, firing individually, posted a 584 to place eighth.
Ohio State dominated smallbore, outpointing Army 2317-2273. Solida and Josh Martin were Army's leaders firing a 572 and 571, respectively, with Cuomo (566) and Gestl (564)closing out the Black Knights' firing contingent.
Unfortunately, we did not have a good performance today in smallbore," said a disappointed assistant coach Rick Johnson. "We had a good week of practice and I expected that we would do better. We ended last semester quite well, but I am not happy with today's results."
The Black Knights (4-6, 2-3 GARC) take on Great America Rifle Conference rival Akron next weekend (Jan. 31) at the Palmyra Invitational. It is also Army's NRA Sectional match.
The Black Knights return home on Feb. 6 to host arch-rival Navy, also a member of the GARC, in closing out their conference slate.
