Women’s Cross Country Ends Season at NCAAs
November 13, 2015 | Women's Cross Country
BOSTON – The Army West Point women's cross country team placed three runners in the top-75, led by Madison Hill, ending their season with a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet, scoring 520 points at Franklin Park on Friday afternoon.
Hill finished in 41st-place after crossing the finish line in 21:46.1. She was followed by freshman Abby Halbrook, who came in 62nd with a time of 22:09.9, and senior captain Lindsay Gabow was the Black Knights' No. 3 finisher, completing the 6K race in 22:20.5.
"We had some nice individual runs today, but our lack of depth kept us from the top-15 finish I thought was possible," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "Madison Hill has really started to run well. She came into the season a little banged up and short on fitness, but has finally started fo finally figure out what she is capable of. She showed that today, and I am proud of her effort."
Army's scoring continued with a 149th-place performance from freshman Payton Padgett in 23:18.0 and was capped by freshman Sarah Jeon, who finished 195th-overall. Jeon completed her final race of the season in 24:03.3.
The Black Knights finish their 2015 campaign with a 3-4 record, posting the most wins in a season since 2002. The season-opening dual meet victory at Maine was the first time since 1997 at Cornell that the team opened the season with a victory.
"All of our women have competed well this fall, we have just lacked the depth to match up with some of the other teams in our region," said Smith. "In particular, I thought our plebes kept getting better throughout the season, and we can't ask for much more than that. Abby Halbrook did a particularly nice job today. This meet was her first real test in a deep field, and she handled it very well. The future is bright for this group."
Army also came away a top-five finishes this season at the Patriot League Championships. The Cadets took fifth at the Patriot League Championships behind a sixth-place performance from Hill. The Leachtown, W. Va., native completed the 6K course in 22:34, good enough to place herself on the All-Patriot First Team.
