Women’s Rugby Falls in NCWVRA Title Game

PROVIDENCE, RI. – In a back-and-forth battle between two of the nation's top teams, the Army West Point women's rugby team fell to Quinnipiac 24-19 in the National Collegiate Women's Varsity Rugby Association (NCWVRA) title game Sunday afternoon.
The two teams were knotted up with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, but Quinnipiac was able to pull away, scoring a last minute try to secure the win.
Quinnipiac started the scoring in the fifth minute, dotting down to take the 5-0 lead. Army would respond three minutes later as Kaeleigh Warfield found the try zone. Nicole Heavirland's successful conversion gave the Black Knights the 7-5 advantage.
Heavirland continued the scoring in the 24th minute as the sophomore scored a try and successful conversion to lift Army to a 14-5 lead.
The Bobcats headed into the break with some momentum as they were able to cut the Army lead to 14-12 through 40 minutes of play.
Quinnipiac kept the pressure on in the opening minutes of the second, regaining the lead with a try in the 45th. Firstie Lindy Clark would tie the game with nine minutes remaining in regulation, as the score stood at 19-19 with time ticking off the clock.
The Northeastern Conference champions, however, would halt Army's momentum in the final five minutes of play, dotting down once again to secure the victory.
With the loss, Army concludes a successful 2015 season with an overall record of 9-5. The Black Knights posted a perfect 2-0 record against service academies, knocking off both Air Force and Navy with ease. The national runners up, Army also finished second in the conference, only dropping one game in conference play. The Black Knights were undefeated at Anderson Rugby Complex.
