Rifle Takes Second At President’s Trophy Match
November 07, 2015 | Rifle
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point rifle team had its strongest showing of the season in the President Trophy's Match on Saturday at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center. The Black Knights placed second among the four service academies in competition for the second straight year, finishing only behind No. 6 Air Force.
No. 15 Army combined for a score of 5815 in the five-man scoring academy format while the Falcons won their third title in the last four years with a 5839 score. No. 13 Navy finished third (5781) and was followed by Coast Guard (5575).
"This is the best score that we've shot in two years," said head coach Web Wright after the match. "Smallbore we did particularly well."
The Black Knights took the smallbore crown with a score of 2895, edging out Air Force by four points. The Cadets were paced by freshman Nathan Brewer who earned medalist honors with a 586 score. That score ties Josh Martin for the best smallbore score this year for Army and marks the second straight season a Black Knights' freshman won the smallbore event in the President's Trophy Match with Martin performing the feat last year. In addition to Brewer's stellar performance, junior Allen Solida tied for runner-up with a 582.
Senior Alyssa Gestl shot a 590 in air rifle, good enough to put her in a fifth-place tie for the day and also tie her career-high while setting a new season-high for any Cadet.
In the four-man NCAA format, the Black Knights posted season-highs in aggregate (4655) and smallbore (2313) while tying their best result in air rifle (2342). Air Force recorded a 4679, Navy was third in NCAA scoring at 4642, and Coast Guard rounded out the group with a 4495.
"I think by and large everybody is pretty happy with the performance," Wright stated. "But I think they all know they can do better. I've seen them have those moments of really high performance in practice. It's just a matter of mentally wrapping their minds around the idea that they can perform at a higher level. They are starting to get it."
