February 01, 2015 | Men's Tennis
WEST POINT, N.Y. – In the final matchup of the Army Kickoff, the Army men’s tennis team dropped to Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member Boston College, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights went winless on the weekend.
For the first time in Army’s first three matches, the Black Knights lost the doubles point. After sweeping both Buffalo and UCF in doubles in its previous two meets, Army fell just short, dropping a pair of closely-contested doubles matches.
The lone bright spot for Army was the duo of senior Peter Sienko and freshman Michael Nguyen, who defeated Alexandre Thirouin and Will Turner, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles. Philip Nelson and Matt Wagner edged out sophomore Sam Lampman and senior Alex Van Velzer at the top spot, 6-4, while Kyle Childree and Hank Workman beat sophomore Kyle Barnes and junior Austin McCasin in a 6-3 final.
The Eagles dominated in singles action. Workman cruised to victory against Van Velzer at No. 2, 6-1, 6-3, and Aidan McNulty got past sophomore Grant Riechmann, 6-4, 6-3, at the third slot. At the sixth spot, Turner topped freshman Michael Sienko, 6-2, 6-2.
McCasin had taken the first set against Kent Mukai at No. 4, as did Nguyen at No. 5 against Childree when the match was called. Nelson led Lampman at the top singles spot when the match ended.
Army (0-3) will welcome UConn and Stony Brook next weekend for a pair of Sunday matches beginning at 9 a.m.
