Black Knights Pick Up First Wins of 2015

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army men’s tennis team earned its first two wins of the season on Sunday, defeating Connecticut and Stony Brook at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights began the day by taking down UConn, 4-1, and capped off the doubleheader with a 4-2 comeback win over Stony Brook.
“That was a great match with Stony Brook,” said head coach Jim Poling. “Just tremendous fighting on both sides. It was one of the best matches I’ve seen in a while.”
Army lost the doubles point to the Huskies as UConn took the first two matches. Joshua Palmer and Jonathan Edwards took down junior Austin McCasin and freshman Michael Sienko, 6-3, at No. 2. Andre Ginzberg and Parker Goldstein also won at third doubles, 6-4, over senior Peter Sienko and freshman Michael Nguyen. Senior Alex Van Velzer and junior Harrison McCormick's doubles match was unfinished.
Singles play was a completely different story for the Black Knights. Army cruised to victory after taking four two-set singles matches. McCasin defeated Edwards, 6-3, 6-2, appearing at No. 3 in the lineup. Nguyen also came away victorious at No. 4, beating Goldstein, 6-3, 6-0.
Michael Sienko picked up his first career dual victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ginzberg at the fifth spot, while junior Ben Davies outlasted Palmer, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), for his first dual win of the season. Van Velzer and junior Caison Best both led their opponents before the 4-1 Army victory came to a close.
The Black Knights lost the doubles point to the Seawolves, 2-1. Sophomore Sam Lampman and Van Velzer earned Army’s only doubles win, topping Alexandre Felisa and Jose Morales, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Junior Harrison McCormick and sophomore Grant Riechmann dropped to Raphael Termat and Kenzo Kauffman, 6-1, and sophomore Kyle Barnes and McCasin lost to Tyler Hoffman and Brandon Stone, 7-5.
Termat beat Lampman at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (6), 7-5, but the Black Knights took came all the way back from down 2-0 to win the match. Army and Stony Brook were evenly matched as the final five singles matches all went in to three sets.
Van Velzer picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Felisa at the second spot, while Riechmann notched his first dual win of 2015, clawing his way back for a 0-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Hoffman at No. 3. McCasin tallied his second win of the day, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3, over Morales at the fourth slot, and Nguyen also went 2-0 on the day after defeating Kenzo Kauffman, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5). Peter Sienko led Brandon Stone when the match was decided.
Army will have four home matches in three days beginning on Friday when Fairleigh Dickinson comes to West Point for a 3:30 p.m. match.
