Army Finishes Seventh At GARC Championships

OXFORD, Miss. - A young Army rifle team closed out the two-day Great America Rifle Championships with a 4609 to finish seventh in the overall standings. The Black Knights posted a 2272 in smallbore Saturday and added a 2337 in air rifle the final day.
Junior team captain Alyssa Gestl and sophomore Danielle Cuomo led Army in air rifle with 589s, a career mark for Cuomo. Allen Solida (584) and Josh Martin (575) joined Cuomo and Gestl in rounding out the Black Knights' firing unit.
"We posted a decent score in air rifle today," noted assistant coach Rick Johnson, who repeated as the GARC's Assistant Coach of the Year. I feel it was a learning experience for a young team and shows room for improvement as they prepare for next season."
Defending champion and No. 1-ranked West Virginia set a national record with a 2386 to claim the title in air rifle after being edged on center shots by No. 5 Kentucky for the smallbore crown the first day en route to capturing its sixth straight title with a 4709.
The Wildcats were second (4671) in the final team standings followed by No. 7 Nebraska (4664) and No. 17 Ole Miss (4613) in rounding out the top four teams in a field of nine.
Kentucky, who won the smallbore title, finished second in air rifle with a 2348 followed by No. 7 Nebraska (2358) and No. 10 Memphis (2341 in garnering the top four awards.
