Women's Cross Country Prepares for BR Jasper Inv.
September 11, 2015 | Women's Cross Country
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Coming off a win against the University of Maine, the Army West Point women's cross country team will compete in the BR Jasper Invitational at Van Cortlant Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Friday. The race will start at 2:30 p.m.
Â
The invitational will be scored as dual meets rather than one invitational, meaning that the Black Knights will earn either a win or a loss against each of the competing teams. The field is made up of Columbia, Brown, Cornell, Manhattan College, Southern Connecticut State and Queens College.
Â
"The reason we scheduled a meet this weekend is because we knew it would be shorter," said Army director of track and field and cross country Mike Smith. "We also know that Army has a long-standing tradition of racing against Cornell so we wanted to keep that going. Our intention going into this meet is to see where we are against a higher level of competition to see how we compare. There will be three Ivy League schools in the competition, which will be good for us to have our team compete against ourselves and one other school."
Â
The Black Knights are coming off a season-opening win when they defeated the University of Maine in a dual meet on Saturday 20-37.
Â
"We found out that the vast majority of our runners are prepared to compete and do the best that they can do," said Smith. "It wasn't perfect, but we ran pretty well given the conditions and the time of year. Now, I feel good about where we are coming out of (Maine), and I think our team feels good about where they are. The Stakes will be raised every meet going forward. Each meet is more competitive and requires more demand from us in terms of our performance."
Â
The requirements and expectations are especially high for the freshmen, who were held back somewhat in Maine. They will be taking a more prominent role this time around, which has the coaching staff excited to get a true evaluation of their talent in a competitive environment.
