Sprint Football Sets Scoring Record in Shutout
September 25, 2015 | Sprint Football
The offense was very balanced with seven different players scoring touchdowns for the Black Knights. Of those seven, four had a multi-touchdown game. Freshmen quarterbacks Brady Miller, Keegan West and Patrick Riley all scored more than once, in addition to sophomore running back Quay Gilmore. Miller is the only one out of the group that had scored prior to this game, which he did with a 12-yard pass to Cooper Lycan against Post. Additionally, freshmen running backs Ronald Fricke III and Jaylen Collier found the end zone for the first time in their collegiate careers.
"Good news is that everybody got considerable playing time," said head coach Mark West, "and I was really proud of the freshmen. It was a good performance by our freshmen quarterbacks. They all got a lot of playing time and preformed really well."
Defensively, Army's team speed dominated the Tigers, as they rushed for -79 net yards on 23 carries. The Black Knights were also able to score with their defense as sophomore Jake Marchillo and freshman Ryan Campi both recorded pick-sixes. Marchillo returned his 41 yards for a score in the third quarter and Campi took his back 30 yards in the fourth quarter. It was the first collegiate touchdown for both of them.
"It was a combination of a lot of things for our defense tonight," said West. "The biggest factor was our speed. We've got a lot of speed, and I think we overwhelmed them."
The scoring opened 4:22 into the game when Miller hooked up with senior wide receiver Justin Hall from 14-yards out. A four-yard sack by sophomore linebacker Zach Trainor pushed the Tigers into their own end zone, resulting in a safety and a 9-0 Army lead. Miller threw his second touchdown in as many passes with just under seven and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter, this time to senior wide receiver Kevin O'Brien for a five-yard reception.
With a 16-0 lead, the Black Knights switched quarterbacks and opted to get West some experience. The freshman from West Point scampered seven yards into the end zone in the final four minutes of the first quarter, giving his team a 23-0 lead going into the second quarter.
On the first play of the second frame, Gilmore made his way through the defense, scoring his first of two touchdowns on the night from four yards out. Eight minutes later, Army found its way back onto the scoreboard as Miller found fellow freshman wide receiver Mike Shannon II for a 12-yard score and his third touchdown pass of the day.
The Black Knights, now with a 37-0 lead, scored one more time in the final minute of the first half when West got Gilmore his first-career receiving touchdown. A safety on the kickoff following the touchdown capped the first-half scoring at 46-0.
Five minutes into the third quarter, Fricke pounded the ball in from one yard away. Riley added a rushing score to his resume, and Marchillo's interception capped the scoring for the third quarter. Riley ran in again with 10 minutes left, this time from six-yards away. Collier broke out a 46-yard carry for his first-collegiate touchdown, which broke the previous scoring record of 77. Army posted a 77-0 win over Princeton in 2005.
The Black Knights return to action on Oct. 3, when they travel to Ithica, N.Y. for a game against Cornell at 1 p.m.
