Army Places Third At All-Academy
February 13, 2016 | Men's Gymnastics
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Army West Point men's gymnastics team recorded a school record on floor exercise and posted top marks in the other events, but it wasn't enough as the No. 13 Black Knight finished third at the All-Academy Championships held in conjunction with the Peachtree Invitational at the Georgia State Sports Arena Saturday.
Â
Senior Jesse Glenn set a season high winning the all-around scoring (86.6) and set another on floor exercise (15.05), along with posting seconds on vault (14.6) and high bar (15.0). He was also third on parallel bars (14.0) and fourth on pommel horse (14.5).
Â
No. 11 Air Force defended its title for the sixth straight year recording a 427.35 followed by No. 12 Navy (424.1) and Army (422.85) as the Black Knights' recorded their highest score of the season.
Â
Army opened the meet behind a career high 73.85 on floor exercise, led by Jesse Glenn's 15.05, which is just shy of his career mark. Personal bests were set in that event by Seth Cannon (14.8), Leo Genders (14.75) and Elliott Herman (14.55).
Â
Army turned in its second highest score of the season on still rings  (68.6) and pommel horse (69.85)  followed by a 71.6 on vault to trail after four events. Glenn posted Army's top score on pommel horse (14.5) and vault (14.6) and Cole Casanova led the team with a career 14.0 on still rings. Casanova finished third in all-around with an 83.35 for his second highest score of the season.
Â
Air Force led 285.35 after four events with Navy a point behind at 284.5 and Army's 283.9 just over a point behind the Falcons and trailing the Midshipmen by under a point.
Â
Glenn turned in Army's top scores on the final two events, parallel bars (14.0) and high bar (15.0) leading the Black Knights to a first in the team scoring in the latter posting a 71.25, the second highest mark of the season.
Â
Sam Kusnitz and Goff finished fourth on vault (14.55) and high bar (14.55), respectively, with Leo Genders placing fifth on high bar (14.25) as well as Andre Hufnagel on pommel horse (14.35). Â Goff's mark was a career high.
"We had a couple of falls and an injury which proved costly," said a disappointed Army coach Doug Van Everen following the meet. "We hit a high percentage in the events as evidenced by career and season marks recorded by our athletes.
Â
"We head into conference (Eastern College Athletic Conference) meets when we take on William and Mary and Springfield. Navy is also in our conference, and I feel we have an excellent shot of defending out title. We will be concentrating on that run starting this week."
Â
Army is idle next week before closing out the home season hosting a triangular against ECAC rivals William & Mary and Springfield on Feb. 27.
