Army Gymnastics Makes History at NCAA Championship with Highest Team Finish

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Army West Point gymnastics made history on Friday night securing the team's highest ever finish at the NCAA Championship meet with a 308.593, which was good enough for ninth place. The Black Knights also qualified five individual finalists across five disciplines for the NCAA Championship finals. Three Black Knights earned top 20 finishes in their respective events in the finals: Thomas Morrow (14th), Jake Prabhakaran (12th), Parallel Bars (17th), Horizontal Bar (15th ).
The Black Knights competed in the second session of the NCAA meet with eventual National Champion Stanford, Third Place Finisher Michigan, Illinois, Penn State and Navy. In the NCAA championship format, each team has four competitors per event with all four scores counting towards the team score and the highest non-team qualifying athletes advance to the final with the opportunity to take home All-American status with a top 8 finish in the NCAA Championship final.
Army collected the third best score on the horizontal bar of all the teams in their session with a 51.322, the second highest team score on the apparatus of the season.
Starting on the Floor Exercise, the Black Knights highest finisher was freshman Thomas Morrow, who recorded a 13.600. Morrow qualified as an individual for the NCAA Championship Final. In the Finals, Morrow bested his score from the night before with a 13.633, which was good enough for 14th overall. The ECAC Rookie of the Year was the third highest finisher from a non-qualifying school.
In the Pommel Horse, sophomore Jake Prabhakaran had a career meet in the NCAA Championship qualifiers tying a career high on the apparatus with a 13.700. Prabhakaran was the highest finisher for the Black Knights and the second highest non-qualifying team qualifier with a fifth-place finish. In Saturday's final, he collected a 13.466 which was good enough for 12th place, the highest of any Black Knight in the final meet.
On the third event, the Still Rings, Jaden Blank was the highest finisher for the Black Knights with a 12.600, earning 15th place at the NCAA Qualifier. On the Vault, the Black Knights qualified two gymnasts to the Finals, Nick Lester and Felipe Junqueira. Lester recorded a 13.800, while Junqueira earned a 13.600. In the Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar, Cash Johnston qualified on both events to the NCAA final round. He scored a 13.266 on the Parallel Bars and recorded a new career high on the Horizontal bar with a 13.500. Johnston finished in 10th and eighth on each of the apparatus' in the qualifying meet. In the finals, he scored a 13.400 (17th) on the Parallel Bars and 13.400 (15th) on the Horizontal Bar.
