Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team trailed by two goals early in the second half before Holy Cross closed the game on a 7-1 run to come away with a 15-7 Patriot League win on Wednesday night at Holy Cross Field.
Army slips to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the league, while Holy Cross wins its second straight to move to 2-9 and 2-1.
Freshman Rachel Treweeke matched her season high with three goals for the Black Knights, including finishing 2-of-2 on free-position shots. In just her second game of the year, freshman Izzy McMahon netted the first two goals of her career, while sophomore Amy Johnston registered a goal, an assist and a game-high seven draw controls.
Freshman Nikki Polhamus also found the back for the net for the visitors and classmate Kayla Rowley totaled four ground balls and a season-best 11 saves, with six coming in the second half.
The Crusaders were led in the scoring department by Maddie Ward and Tess MacKay, who tallied five goals and three goals, respectively. Kaitlin Concilio posted a pair of goals and four assists and Keely Connors added two goals and two assists.
Goalkeeper Julia Maloney turned in an eight-save performance to pick up the win.
Holy Cross controlled an early 6-1 advantage after the first 14:06, during a run that included back-to-back goals from Ward. McMahon provided Army's first goal on an assist from Johnston to make the score 3-1 with 21:31 left in the opening half.
McMahon added her second of the game at the first period's 13:53 mark before Treweeke connected for consecutive goals to cap a 5-2 Army scoring run that extended into the second half. Ward netted her third marker of the evening to bring the score to 7-2, but Polhamus and Johnston scored 4:19 apart to move the Black Knights back to within three goals, 7-4.
Baker Earl put Holy Cross back in front by four goals 3:08 before halftime and Treweeke found the back of the net with 1:54 left after scoring on a pass from sophomore Rachel Hornick. Treweeke notched her second goal of the contest 1:35 into the second frame, as Army trailed 8-6 for the game's closest margin since the 21:43 point of the opening half.
The Crusaders regained control and halted the Black Knights' run with seven of the game's last eight goals during the final 27:15 of the contest. Four different players tallied goals during the game-ending run, while Treweeke scored at the second period's 4:59 mark to give Army its first goal since the 23:26 mark of the half.
Army is back at West Point this weekend, when it faces Navy on Saturday, April 2 at noon. Saturday's Army-Navy game will be presented by St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital.
